NQ/Junior Associate β Police Law: Defendant (0-3 years PQE) β Police & Emergency Services Team β Manchester
A unique opportunity has arisen for an NQ/Junior Associate (ideally with 0-3 years PQE) to work from our Manchester office.
The Team
Siobhan Mullins' team is seeking an NQ to 3 years PQE Solicitor to run their own caseload and to assist on the full spectrum of civil actions, including assault, false imprisonment, serious injury, data protection breaches, Equality Act breaches and violations of human rights.Β The team is renowned for its experience and expertise in defending civil actions against the police and is regularly instructed in high profile and significant cases. The team also handles complex and high value claims, including claims arising from terrorism incidents, deaths in police custody and failures to secure medical intervention following catastrophic injuries in police custody.
This presents an opportunity to work on a variety of fascinating and novel claims for a number of police forces and their insurers. Β In addition to civil actions, the team is instructed in relation to a substantial group litigation case and represents a number of clients in relation to a high-profile public inquiry. The team also represents a number of major insurers and corporate clients in catastrophic injury and large loss (CILL) claims arising from injuries at work, sexual assault, harassment and stress/bullying. Candidates with experience in defendant insurance and large loss claims will also therefore be considered.
The team offers a supportive environment and a hybrid working week with 2 days in our Manchester office and 3 days working from home.
Key Responsibilities
Acting and assisting on pre-litigated and litigated civil actions against the police on behalf of police forces and their insurers.
Acting and assisting on catastrophic injury and large loss claims pursued against the police or on instruction by major insurers and corporations.
Handling own fast-track/multi-track caseload and assisting solicitors and partners with complex, sensitive and/or high value claims.
Prepare own liability strategies, reporting to clients, drafting witness statements, preparing instructions to counsel and experts and attending in conference and trials, conducting negotiations and attendance at a variety of ADR formats.
Conducting research and keeping up to date with legal and industry practices.
Assist with client development, client training and networking.
Essential Skills & Experience
Β
Experience of running a caseload of claims against the police and/or large loss EL/PL work, including experience of determining liability.
Experience of working within a defendant police/public authority or large loss team.
A high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
The ability to meet deadlines and work efficiently and effectively.
A professional manner with the ability to build relationships internally and externally.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent academic background.
